PICASSO - ICT Policy, Research and Innovation for a Smart Society: towards new avenues in EU-US ICT collaboration

Summary

The project PICASSO “ICT Policy, Research and Innovation for a Smart Society: towards new avenues in EU-US ICT collaboration“, funded under the European Union Horizon 2020 programme, brings together EU and US prominent specialists with the aim of reinforcing EU-US ICT collaboration in pre-competitive research in key enabling technologies related to societal challenges of common interest – 5G Networks, Big Data, Internet of Things and Cyber Physical Systems – and to support the EU-US ICT policy dialogue.

Achievements

PICASSO has started in January 2016, and since then the four Expert Groups with renown specialists from the EU and the US have already been set up: a first Expert Group workshop has taken place in Washington D.C., USA, in May 2016. Several reports have been published among which an Overview of the ICT landscape in the EU and the US and a report about ICT-related access opportunities in collaborative programmes on both sides of the Atlantic. PICASSO also reached good audiences in its first webinar on funding opportunities and on a webinar discussing the first policy brief on Privacy and Data protection. A major PICASSO event, a “Trans-Atlantic Symposium on Technology and Policy for a Smart Society” is planned to be organized on 19-20 June 2017 in Minneapolis, USA, and a call for sessions has been opened recently for this event.

Impact in international / European cooperation

PICASSO looks specifically into EU-US collaboration in targeted ICT domains, as well as policy issues relevant to these domains: 5G Networks, Big Data, Internet of Things and Cyber Physical Systems. This unique linkage between technological and transversal topics and the involvement of high-level experts from both sides of the Atlantic is expected to bring concrete ideas for new ways of collaboration. Dedicated reports (e.g. Opportunity reports on potential collaboration in each of the domains such as joint calls and policy recommendations) will be disseminated to relevant stakeholders from the technical communities and policy makers in order to maximize the impact of project findings.
