Funding Programmes Open to EU-Based Researchers/Institutions

The Link2US project has identified fourteen funding programmes within six U.S. federal government entities that are open to European Union (EU)-based researchers/institutions.

For assistance in finding a relevant funding programme Link2US has made available two methods for dissemination:

1. A database (see below)

2. A printed catalogue - to download a pdf version please click here (4.8MB)

Report

A report by the Link2US project has been released, that looks at key issues EU-based researchers/institutions face when applying to and participating in the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding programme. NIH is the largest U.S. programme in which there is direct funding of EU-based researchers/institutions.

The report, European Participation in U.S. Federal Science & Technology Research Funding Programmes: Survey of Researchers and Institutions on National Institutes of Health Grant Funding, surveyed researchers and institutions in the EU, through their grant administrators, who received direct NIH awards during U.S. fiscal years 2003-2010.

Important Note

In order to identify these fourteen funding programmes, 11 U.S. federal government entities were surveyed. Public web resources were searched and in-person interviews as well as interviews via telephone and email were conducted with the federal entities. Please note that while the U.S. has more than 11 federal government funding entities that fund R&D, this number surveyed represents the largest funders. Additional programmes/entities will be added and updated annually during the course of the project.

Those entities in bold below have current programmes open to EU-based researchers/institutions.

Open can refer to the following two definitions:

1. Direct funding, where applications can be submitted to the entity for the EU-based researcher/institution to directly receive funding. Examples include: DOE, DHS, NIH

2. Other funding, where other cooperative mechanisms are implemented. Examples include: EPA, NSF
